El Riego ranch is located at a distance of 1,5 km from the center of the village and just behind Tom's Rancho Alegre. Although it is possible to get yourself chauffeured directly to the pool by taxi, it is unquestionably more delightful on foot.
The openings times for the natural swimming pool (no chemicals, just pure spring water) are Fridays to Mondays. Every Tuesday to Thursday the pool is drained cleaned and refilled again.
Two simple rooms with bath are available for those wishing to stay overnight.

Octavio Ramos is a landowner who belongs to one of the very few "alternatives" in Mexico. Cheesed off with the hectic life of a noisy and stuffy town he gave up his career as a lawyer to fulfil a childhood dream. He bought a 12 hectare (about 30 acres) piece of land with its own spring and devoted himself to farming.
The idea of a swimming pool developed more or less by coincidence. In order to avail of the spring water for a steady irrigation of his land, a huge basin for storing the water was first of all essential. It was at this point that the system of the two birds and the one stone came to being. Octavio did not just build a simple basin but a swimming pool that could be emptied weekly and its water further used to irrigate his land.
In the wink of an eye, the people of Chacalapa and its surroundings started to appear in full swing to avail of this newfound grand refreshment!! A simple restaurant was then attached and about 20 years ago Octavio officially opened his pool under the name of El Paraíso.

Since then a toddler's paddling pool and an extra pool with a slide has been added on to it. The restaurant offers good meals, snacks, delicious tropical beverages and beer, all at a reasonable price. It is even possible to catch your own meal as Octavio has also created a fishpond where giant river prawns and perch breed ! The spawn is obtained from the university in Puerto Angel (UMAR) in exchange for pregnant female specimens.
Those interested in viewing international sport events in a relaxed atmosphere, will find a television with a huge screen and sky TV situated in the restaurant area.

In the course of many years Octavio and his family have created a botanical garden with abundant flowers and dangling fruits everywhere you look.
In El Riego a whole variety of tropical and subtropical plants flourish, beginning with banana, lemon, lime, grapefruit, avocado, mango, mandarin, guayabas, mameyes, sapote right through to the breadfruit tree. In the wooded area of the region you will come across coffee bean and cocoa trees.
The soft surge of the spring at the heart of the jungle together with the gentle rustle of the leaves and the singing of the birds create an atmosphere that is peaceful, enticing one to drink in its natural beauty and unwind.
To take further advantage of the spring, Octavio acquired a filter system. By filling glass balloons with water he is now able to distribute to the surrounding neighbourhood.
