"The solitary Mexican loves fiestas and public gatherings. Any occasion for getting together will serve, any pretext to stop the flow of time and commemorate men and events with festivals and ceremonies. We are a ritual people, and this characteristic enriches both our imaginations and our sensibilities, which are equally sharp and alert. The art of the fiesta has been debased almost everywhere else, but not in Mexico. There are few places in the world where it is possible to take part in a spectacle like our great religious fiestas with their violent primary colors, their bizarre costumes and dances, their fireworks and ceremonies, and their inexhaustible welter of surprises: the fruit, candy, toys and other objects sold an these days in the plazas and open-air markets. ..." | Octavio Paz - The Labyrinth of Solitude

(Day of the Angel )

"...But the fiestas which the Church and State provide for the country as a whole are not enough. The life of every City and village is ruled by a patron saint whose blessing is celebrated with devout regularity. ..." | Octavio Paz - The Labyrinth of Solitude

The feast of the Angel begins on the 30th September in the evening time with the Calenda. The statue of the angel is removed from the church and carried in a procession through the whole village with the purpose of calling out the beginning of the festival.
The next day after mass, a longer parade takes place on the water where decorated boats guide the statue of the angel through the bay and nearby surroundings.
Later the best decorated boat is selected and presented with a prize.
Throughout the whole day refreshments are accessible accompanied by the entertainment of traditional music in a marquee on the pier.
The festival ends at nightfall with a village dance that goes on well into the hours of the next day!
This festival is organized by the church parish.

(Cultural Week in Puerto Angel )
|
"...During the days before and after the twelfth of December, time comes to a full stop, and instead of pushing us toward a deceptive tomorrow that is always beyond our reach, offers us a complete and perfect today of dancing and revelry, of communion with the most ancient and secret Mexico. Time is no longer succession, and becomes what it originally was and is: the present, in which past and future are reconciled. ..." | Octavio Paz - The Labyrinth of Solitude

The cultural week takes place in the second week of December around the 12th.
The program offers a wide amount of activities that range from events such as football and volleyball tournaments, to competitions such as swordfish, sandcastles, child's art, Miss Bikini, gastronomy and decorating boats. Traditional music and dance groups are also displayed not forgetting the religious part of the festival with the procession of Our lady of Guadalupe, Mexico's national patroness.
Of course the village dance is not left out here either!
The process of events on the 12th December the day of Our lady of Guadalupe and the evening prior to that, are similar to the above description of Día del Ángel.
This festival is organized by the Unión de Comerciantes y Prestadores de Servicios Turisticos de Puerto Angel, S.C.L, an association of tourist orientated enterprises in Puerto Angel.
